The King’s Brazil Institute is delighted to host the launch of Harvest in Times of Drought and we hope you will be able to join us and three of the co-authors to celebrate this landmark publication. The book explores questions of sustainable development and collective pedagogies in the Brazilian Amazon, and features artwork and firsthand accounts of community upheaval caused by drought and industrialisation.

The launch is dedicated to Maria Silva, one of the book’s co-authors, assassinated on May 24, 2011. It will inspire anyone interested in Latin America, Pedagogy, Applied Theatre and Performance Studies, Arts for Social Transformation, Agrarian Reform.

1. Field of Research

All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included under this program. The candidate must either be majoring or conducting research in a related field.

2. Duration of Program

Fellowships are awarded for a period of two months starting from 12 June through 22 August. For more detailed information regarding the program’s schedule, please refer to the Schedule for the FY2012 program.

3. Eligibility

1) Be a citizen or permanent resident of the US, the UK, France, Germany or Canada (Others with equivalent status may apply if approved by the nominating authority in one of the above countries.)
2) Candidates must fulfill one of the following conditions:

• Hold a doctorate degree when the program goes into effect, which must have been received within six years prior to April 1 of the said year.
• Be enrolled in a university graduate program.
  * Not required to hold full-time position.

3) Candidates must receive in advance acceptance from their host researchers.
4) Candidates must aspire to become a researcher in future.
* Note: Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under a JSPS Fellowship Programs are not eligible.

4. Host Researchers and Host Institutes

The host researcher must be a researcher who is employed full-time or classified as being employed full-time (excluding Jokyo, assistant professors, and Joshu, research assistants) at a university or research institution that is eligible to apply to MEXT for funding under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific-Research Program (Kakenhi) and approved by JSPS as an appropriate institution for hosting young foreign researchers.
Note: Full-time employment classification is determined by the regulations of the host institution.

6. Application and Selection Procedures

[1] Nomination

JSPS receives applications for this program only through the foreign nominating authorities listed below. Application procedures may vary somewhat by authority. If you are interested in applying for the program, please contact the nominating authority in your country about the detailed application procedures.

[2] Selection

JSPS asks the prospective host institutions whether they will officially accept the nominees; and upon confirmation, selects the successful applicants, and then notifies the nominating agencies of the results. Concurrently, JSPS sends a formal letter of invitation to each successful applicant through the designated nominating agencies.

Having researched where you’d like to go by attending the Study Abroad Fair, reading information on the King’s website and our partners’ websites, and speaking to both returning and visiting students, it’s time to apply to King’s to study abroad!

All students applying to study abroad are recommended to list at least two destination universities in the online application. Those indicating the University of California must list three California campuses where their major is studied. This counts as one destination.

Modern Language students in French, German and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies must list at least three partner universities.

On submitting the completed online application, an email will be sent to the first named referee on the application, requesting them to provide the Study Abroad Office with a reference on your behalf.

 To have your application accepted, you must also have uploaded the following two supporting documents:

1. PERSONAL STATEMENT OF NO MORE THAN 500 WORDS CONSIDERING:

• Why you want to study abroad
• What particularly interests you about your first choice institution and country
• Why you feel you are qualified to participate in an exchange programme and what you want to achieve during your experience abroad
• How will a year/semester abroad contribute to your academic goals, future career and personal objectives?

Applicants must:

• Have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years at the time of application.
•  Hold an undergraduate degree from a UK higher education institution or be able to how evidence of equivalent education in the UK. Final year undergraduates are ot eligible, nor are holders of a permanent academic post who wish to take leave of absence.
• Either be a student at the time of application or have been registered as a student within the last 8 years.
• Explain why their work requires residence overseas.

Applications will be considered in all subject areas, but the awards are not intended for those who wish only to improve their knowledge of modern languages. The awards are tenable at a centre of learning anywhere in the world except the UK and USA.

Studentships consist of a maintenance allowance of £17,000 per annum, plus a return air fare to the country of tenure and a baggage allowance, and an allowance of £6,000 per annum when a student is accompanied by a dependent partner. A supplement will be paid to students in Japan. Further allowances are paid at the discretion of the Committee, e.g. a contribution towards overseas fees; internal travel costs associated with the course of study or research and, where appropriate, fieldwork expenses.

Studentships are tenable for between 12 and 24 months and must commence between 1 June 2012 and 1 May 2013.

Applications can only be made via the Trust’s online Grant Application System www.leverhulme.ac.uk. Candidates will be informed of the result of their application by the end of May 2012.

Call for expressions of interest – EPSO/CAST/S/1/2011 – Translators (Function Group IV)

The European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) is launching a selection procedure to set up a database of successful candidates from which to recruit contract staff in the field of translation.

The database of successful candidates will be made available to the various translation departments in the European Institutions. The positions will be based in Brussels and Luxembourg depending on the needs of the services.

Am I eligible?

You must be:

• a citizen of an EU country;
• educated to degree level.

You must have:

• a perfect command of one of the official languages of the European Union;
• a thorough knowledge of English, French or German, must be different from language 1 above;
• a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union, different from languages 1 and 2 above.
